The Domain Name Whois Search and Query

By Joshua Nikenya

If you have spent any time online, you have probably at least heard of domain name whois search and query tools. This is is one of the most widely used tools in the field of domain name registration. People who are looking for for good domain names will definitely come across it when registering their domain names.

If you've never heard these two terms before or haven't learned what a whois search or whois query are, keep on reading to learn what they are.

Whois is a database which has information on the registrants of domain names. There are whois search tools which allow you to find out who owns a domain name and other information about the domain. A domain name whois search and query is an easy way of looking for information on the owners of top level domains (for instance, .com, .net, .org, .uk, .biz and so on).

A domain name whois search will provide contact information for the registrant of the domain name, the administrative and technical contact too. When you register a domain name, you need to ensure that you provide accurate contact information; and if you are searching for a domain name, keep in mind that it can take up to two days for domain names to show up in a whois search after being registered. This means that just because you do not find any contact information listed for a domain name, it does not necessarily mean that it's available. However, there are other services which let you check if a given domain name is available, irrespective of what your whois query turns up.

A whois query allows you to find the information stored in the domain registration databases of domain registrar firms. If you search for a particular domain name and nothing is turned up by your whois search, there's a high probability that this domain name is available. It is not a guarantee of course, but you should take this as an encouraging sign if you're interested in registering a domain name. However, if you're just searching in the database of one particular domain name registrar and find nothing, this means only that the domain name isn't registered with that specific domain name registrar.

A domain name whois search and query for a domain name that you might want to register is one of the first steps to take in your search for a domain name - it's important to be thorough and make sure that the domain name you want is available, after all. Your domain name is a crucial part of your brand and this is one thing that you absolutely need to get right.
