How a good domain name can make automotive SEO successful

By George Lippy

Welcome to the first article in my series on automotive SEO. In this article I am going to explain a little about how important choosing the right domain name can be for your business' future success. A domain name is so much more than just a name for your website, or something that people can use to find you, though these are certainly good reasons to choose a relevant domain name. More or less a domain name is something that people can use in place of the IP address assigned to a website by default to find it on the web. A good domain name will be catchy, short, and include at least one of your chosen key words for your website.

When deciding what your domain name should be, look beyond the name of your business! Research key words for your products and services; you will need this information later for your automotive SEO campaign elements like content and code structure, and it will help you form your domain name too. If you are a used car dealer operating in Chicago and the name of your business is A Plus Used Cars, then you don't necessarily have to go with a domain like aplususedcars.com, you could use something like chicagousedcars.com instead. It all comes back to key words. Key words are very competitive, so get them while you can!

Automotive SEO has become a very competitive industry in recent years as more and more dealerships take to the internet in an effort to increase their leads and show potential customers what they have to offer. Often larger dealerships are the primary customers of larger SEO firms, and smaller dealerships are left holding the bag and trying to figure out what to do. No matter the size of your business or the size of the automotive SEO firm you wish to work with, any good automotive SEO firm will tell you that a good domain name is very important to the success of your business in the future.

The end goal of any good automotive SEO campaign is to develop solid inbound links from other websites and to cultivate leads for the dealership in question. Inbound links can be very important because it is on these that Google bases much of their decision as to how to rank your website. When a link points to your website, Google looks at how relevant that link is to your site, and how relevant your site is to the comment the link is a part of. So relevance, reputation, and authority have large roles in the effectiveness of inbound links.

When you have selected your new domain name, the next thing you should think of is what extension you would like to have polish it off. Of course the most popular extension by far is .com for any domain name, but don't discount other extensions such as .net and .biz which though less commonly used are also less expensive than more popular options. Though they might not be searched for as often they are still popular enough to be useful extensions for you new domain name.
